You want to personalise your ring stack, but you’re not sure how to make your favourite rings work together? Or do you just want to create a cohesive look, but the end result just looks… well… plain ol’ ugly?!

Ok,ok, I'm sure it's not that bad but I totally understand the struggle!  Don't worry, I got you!

My secret ring stacking formula will have you stacking your rings like a pro!

You will know what mistakes to avoid, find out how to create the perfect ring stack that flaunts your own personal style, and rock that cohesive ring stacked look with confidence and flare!

4 Ring Stacking Mistakes - You Didn’t Know You Were Making!

Are you a ‘ good news first’ or’ bad news first’ kind of person? Personally, I love to finish on a high note, so let’s start with the bad news. There are definitely ring stacking do’s and don’ts. Phewf!  I’m glad we got that out in the open. Ok, so how about the good news? Well the good news is, ring stacking mistakes are super easy to avoid!

So let’s get started.

MISTAKE #1: Too Many Feature or Statement Rings

Remember I mentioned looking like you just raided a pawn shop? You know, when you can barely make out you have fingers on your hand and you're featuring every ring style from newly engaged on a budget to a discoloured vintage ring that looks like it was just found with a metal detector?

Actually, there is nothing wrong with showing off the feature rings that you love. But would it really be a feature ring if you wore all your statement rings together?

Think about it...Did Kate Winslet stand out more in the movie ‘The Holiday’ or the ‘Titanic?’

Exactly. The Titanic. It’s easier to stand out when you’re getting maximum exposure and not sharing centre stage. Similarly, if you have too many of standout rings, your favourite ring won’t be able to shine like the star she is!

TRY 1 or 2 rings that you would like to feature and compliment them with some other rings that have more delicate, subtle accents, or even a simple plain band.

MISTAKE #2: Just Too Many Rings

Wait, what? I’m trying to make a ring stack here, the more the better right? Not exactly.

You know you’ve gone way overboard with the ring stacking when you can barely move your finger. Then when you take your rings off your skin is left feeling a little gross. Eek!  Of course, if bending your finger isn’t a priority for you and you are prepared for the skin horrors that await when you remove them, then go crazy!

I get it, you love rings. So do I. But if you want to ace ring stacking and get compliments without having to sacrifice the use of your hands then…

TRY ring stacks with 3 rings. Or if you have ring bands that are really thin (like 1.5-2mm) then go all out, and go for 5.

MISTAKE #3: Ring Shapes That Don't Work Together

Let’s face it, If you put all your favourite solo music artists together in a band, not only is it probably going to last less than a week but you might have some serious style clashing.

It would be nice if you could just stack up all your favourite rings together, but unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. It takes serious skill to stack rings that weren’t made to be stackable rings.

TRY experimenting with shapes that sit well together or choose rings that have a flat edge and are especially made to be stackable rings. That way your rings won't be swinging around or have large gaps where they don't belong.

MISTAKE #4: Having Ring Stacks on EVERY. SINGLE. FINGER.

Ok, story time.

When I first worked at the jewellery store, I bought all these beautiful rings and piled them up on EVERY finger. That’s what you do when you have a lot of favourites and are... well...just plain indecisive. I took ring stacking to a whole new level. While I probably would have been able to defend the store front with my knuckle busting setup, I realised that I couldn’t really appreciate any of my rings because I was so distracted by all of them.

So here's the suggestion.

TRY choosing one finger for your big ring stack. Then either separate it by wearing no rings on the next finger or try a single delicate band. Another option would be to try a non-traditional ring stack, where you layer rings horizontally across your fingers. Like you see in the photo below. But even then, it's nice to leave one finger bare - probably the pinky finger or the thumb.

Creating the Perfect Ring Stack- Flaunting your Unique Personal Style

Do you know the best thing about ring stacking?

Nobody can make and wear a ring stack the way YOU do. This is your opportunity to have some fun and create your very own unique style of stacking and you can even make your ring stack meaningful. Here's a few tips on how to personalise your ring stacks without compromising on looks.

STYLE TIP 1: Make it Meaningful

Are you a bit of a secret softy on the inside? Maybe you want to create a ring stack of bands with words that inspires you each day. Or maybe you have a special person or little ones in your life that you want to remind yourself of. Whatever your reason, it can be such a great idea to stack rings with special meaning.

TRY something different like creating ring stacks that symbolise milestones in your life. Maybe each ring could represent something only you know about. We also can't forget to mention the wedding, engagement and anniversary ring sets that carry the sentiment of love. This type of stacking has been around long before the stackable trend took the world by storm.

STYLE TIP 2: Create your Vibe

You might have a style that you are totally obsessing over right now, like the boho beach vibe. We actually have an entire collection dedicated to this style since it's so popular. There are so many different patterns to play around with and it’s easy to create your own personal trademark with this style.

If your not a Boho babe, then hey - why not try something more simple and minimal. This style is my personal fave so it was always going to get a shout out. Minimalist rings look amazing stacked because they rarely look overdone and give an overall classy look.

TRY A single ring layered on each of the four fingers as a minimal alternative to a vertical ring stack. Or for a boho look, bubble bead bands, twist bands or a classic plain band stacked with another of your favorite boho patterns can really have you feeling the vibe.  Another stylish stacking option is to stack identically shaped chevron V rings or wave rings - as shown in the picture below.

STYLE TIP 3: Bring out the Bling Bling

Ok, my bling bling girls where are you at?!

I haven’t forgotten about you. You can definitely bling it up with ring stacks.

TRY A slightly wider stone set band in the center with a finer band on each side. Or bands of similar widths but complimentary styles. You can even find stackable stone set rings that are already made to go together as a complimentary ring set.

STYLE TIP 4: Mixing your Metals

Yes, you heard right!  Usually it looks elegant to choose your one metal colour and stick to that. BUT why not stir up some ring stack envy and mix it up? Rose gold, yellow gold and sterling silver look great together, especially if you you're stacking identical rings.

TRY A 3-piece, tri-colour set. With gold tones really making a comeback, this idea is modern, interesting and oh so classy. This look is featured in the photo below.

Creating That Perfect Cohesive Ring Stack

The 'unmatched eclectic look' or the 'matched made to go together look' - which stacking style is for you? Either way you want the end look to gel well together. So here are my tips and techniques that will have you owning that cohesive ring stack style.

COHESION TIP 1: Be Balanced

Display your rings in a balanced way on your fingers. Our eye is naturally drawn to clean lines so when you are stacking your rings make sure your eye comfortably knows where to look next Try to avoid the zig-zag approach to stacking. For example, a big stack on the pointer finger, then another big stack on the ring finger with a fine band on the middle finger and little finger could look a little confusing to the eye.

TRY: A perfectly sloped line, or a V shape works nicely.

COHESION TIP 2: Colour Blocking

You know what I mean, we do it every day when we put our outfits together. The same goes for matching your stones. If you wouldn't wear colours together in clothing together then you’re probably not going to like the end result on your fingers either.

TRY stacking similar hues together. As an example, sapphire, blue topaz and aquamarine would look stunning together. Or a contrasting classic like your favourite colour stone with a clear stone can never go wrong.

COHESION TIP 3: Playful Patterns

Get playful with patterns and textures. If you find that your rings with patterns and textures look too ‘busy’ together then simply use plain spacer bands in between to bring it all together.

TRY something a little different and space your stack out between bands to show a little skin. This can look super chic.

COHESION TIP 4: Mixing Shapes

Now this is where a little skill comes in. Different shapes can work well together in a ring stack but ONLY if they fit around each other nicely without awkward looking gaps.

TRY 2 V-shaped rings with a diamond, pear or marquise shape in the center. Similar to the black stone ring shown in the boho stack photo below.  Another way to mix your shapes is to find a ring that is open at the top then another shape can fit nicely into the open space. If in doubt, go the stress-free method and purchase a stackable ring set and know that they are going to work well together.

So now that I’ve shared my top tips and techniques for ring stacking, you're totally equipped to be a pro ring stacker!  You know what mistakes I have made in the past and how to avoid them, how to flaunt your own personal ring stack style and how to rock that perfectly cohesive ring stack look that is sure to have people doing a double take to admire your finesse.
